COVID INVADES PARADISE!
You already know all there is to know about the covid-19 situation in the U.S., so here's the St. Barths report:
We are in "France'' of sorts, so Macron rules apply: stores, restaurants and bars closed, except pharmacies and food stores, which are crowded but well stocked. Happily beaches and the ocean are still open.
The result: home cookin' and beaucoup de toilet paper, sun, and beach.
We have two active covid-19 cases on this island. Wanna hear stupid? Two people who live here went on a cruise! A cruise! Duh. Came home with a dose of covid, and now under quarantine. Must be Republicans. (In U.S., 40% of Repubs do not believe things will get worse, 79% of Dems believe things will get worse. Once again, the R's show their FNRB. (Fox News Reality Blindness, a malady for which, like covid-19, science has not yet found a cure.)
Unlike the U. S. Pinocchio-in-Chief, St. Barths President Bruno Magras has let the people who know something deal with the pandemic.
He has not downplayed the risks of covid-19 because the spread of the disease was potentially devastating to the local economy.
He has not told people to just go to work and they will get better.
He has not told his constituents that after infecting a small number of people, the disease will miraculously disappear in April.
He has not claimed he was genetically endowed with great scientific knowledge because his uncle taught high school chemistry.
He has not assured the island population that there is a chance we will have an effective vaccine in "several months."
Let's face it, our Pinocchio is an illiterate moron. He gave a speech from the oval office on Monday night that crashed the stock market. The most egregious error was his statement that his ban on travel from Europe would include cargo. The WSJ reported our leader misread the teleprompter! It said the ban will not apply to cargo. Eh, just left out a little word.
And the Saturday press briefing: "Relax, we are doing great. It will all pass." False, outrageously and dangerously false. Dr. Fauci followed by saying: "Look, I meant what I said. The worst is still ahead of us."
And that obscene presentation was on a stage where scientists repeated that the key to the control of the spread of the virus is social distancing, so Trump and Pence arranged to have some 8 or 9 prisoners in blue uniform within 12" of each other standing behind the podium! WTF?
I could go on and on. There is almost no end to the dangerous mismanagement.
Look, I know Trump is busy these days. Lots on his plate. Yesterday he took time out to criticize ... yup, Hillary Clinton. The subject? Emails and Benghazi. See, he is paying attention to the important stuff.
Okay, enough. You know all this. I share one bit of media that tells you how everybody is pulling together. This will brighten your day, as it did mine:
I confess that for Pinks and me, our default TV stations are MSNBC and CNN. But every now and then, we just check in to see what the other side is saying. Hey, however unlikely, they might have something important to impart. So we switched to Fox and got Lou Dobbs. He was crowing about a comment made by Joe Biden. Biden was arguing with a guy in a hard hat about gun control, and Biden said something like "Hey, don't be a horse's ass." Dobbs played the clip, and made a comment to his sidekick, "Well, that certainly was not presidential!" Can you imagine a comment like that coming from a supporter of Donald Trump, the coarsest, most vulgar president ever?
Of course, we promptly changed the channel. I have never been able to endure more than a few minutes of those people.
Sigh, the bad news is Pinocchio reigns, the rest of the block-headed puppets in his administration don't dare disagree for fear of being found to be disloyal, his base will believe everything he says no matter how absurd, and he continues to mismanage the pandemic.
The good news is that he is a lame duck president. Whatever gaffes Trump has made up to now, you can be sure he will outdo himself between today and November 3.
A bientot.
