TRUMP VS. CLOROX

A large segment of our citizenry worry our republic will not survive another four years of President Donald Trump. While I believe he is indeed a threat to our Constitutional norms, I take solace in my view that Trump cannot win in November.

Recall, please, his 2016 victory was by a margin of 77,000 votes out of more than 120 million cast. I need not here examine the failures of the 2016 Clinton campaign, except to say that, i) for whatever reason(s), she revolted lots of voters who, though "Never-Trumpers", voted for a third-party candidate or a write-in, and, ii) at bottom, the Clinton campaign failed to recognize that three states they counted on as "safe" were actually in play. You can be sure that Biden will not make the same mistake.

This time around, I believe Biden could stay home and win.  As I have earlier predicted, Trump will defeat himself.
The latest string of blunders was (and continues to be) his reaction to the covid-19 pandemic. The man cannot help it. He is so totally focused on himself, he stumbles over and over again. In an effort to pat himself on the back, and maintain stock market values, (which he regards as the marker of the country's economic success under his reign) Trump dealt with the covid-19 problem as follows:

Jan 30: "We have it totally under control: one person, coming in from China."

Feb 2: "We pretty much have shut it down."

Feb 10:  "In April, it will go away."

Feb: 14: "People are getting better. They are all getting better."

Feb 26: "It will disappear. We have 15 cases. In a couple of days it will be close to zero."

Feb 27: "Like a miracle, it will disappear, and you will be fine."

Feb 28: " We won, easily. We will have a vaccine relatively soon."

Feb 28: At a rally, Trump downplayed the seriousness of the epidemic and called the Democratic criticism of him "another hoax." The crowd roared its approval.

Mar 2: "We will soon have therapies -- another word for a cure."

Mar 3:  "We will have a cure soon."

Mar 4: "You are talking about very small numbers in the United States."

Mar 5: "Our numbers are lower than just about anybody."

Mar 10: "It is really working out. A lot of good things are going to happen."

Mar 11: "We are responding with great speed and professionalism."

Mar 12: "It's gonna go away."

Mar 13: " No I don't take responsibility (for federal government failure to earlier deal with this emergency)."

Mar 15: "It is all going to go away."

March 17: "This is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic."

March 23: "I would like to see the churches jam packed on Easter Sunday."

March 26: 68,000+ cases, 1,000+ deaths in the U.S., and totals climbing fast. We are now the world's epicenter of covid-19.

Conclusion:

Do not bother to watch the new "Nightly Trump Fireside Chat." I can tell you what it will be. More "Me, Me, Me." And when and if Pence speaks, we will get more "Him, Him, Him." Trump will waiver between "I am a wartime President," and, "Don't worry, I got this." I suggest spraying your TV screen with Clorox toilet cleaner, stay home, and watch "Better Call Saul" on Netflix.

A bientot.
