DA BAIT

 

Tuesday night I went to bed at 9:35 pm. I could not tolerate another minute of watching my president piss all over my democracy. 

(And, I gather from the next morning's press reports, the worst was yet to come: while I was upstairs fighting sleep, Trump was downstairs encouraging right-wing militia groups to trash the election.)

Trump's absolute refusal to engage in civil debate, his obstreperous and abusive effort to bait both adversary and moderator just confirmed his true nature. The only thing that could conceivably control this would-be Supreme Leader is a sharp public rebuke from Republican Congressional leadership, and that ain't happening. They fear his wrath. (Good, he will take them down with him!)

The next morning, I read that the Committee on Presidential Debates, the independent bi-partisan organization that has crafted the rules and produced presidential debates for the last ten election cycles, was hurriedly meeting to discuss a rule change for the next debate (a "Town Hall" in Miami on October 15). The goal was to avoid another Trumpian assault upon civility and upon the mission of the CPD,  which, in retrospect, now sounds laughable, i.e., "to foster meaningful discussion of the issues."

So I sent this email to the Committee:

To the Commission on Presidential Debates:

Ladies and Gentlemen:

You have announced your intention to "modify the debate format" after last night's noisome street brawl? Is that a joke? 

Trump has already not only disgraced himself, but intentionally made a mockery of your goal of "educating the public." 

Your stated mission is to foster "meaningful discussion." Both candidates signed on to and accepted your format. Are you really surprised Trump broke his promise? Now you are going to "change the format"? 

Going forward, you think you can toilet-train this petulant, ignorant, wilful, dishonest, narcissist child-- something his parents could not accomplish?

Please. Spare us. Terminate the presidential debates. 

It was a valiant try. You failed. We have seen enough.
