UNITY NOW?
Immediately after Donald Trump was shot on July 13, all Republicans, including Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House, called for “national unity.” That national unity lasted up until the first 30 minutes of the 90-minute Trump acceptance speech at the Republican convention. It was nowhere to be seen in any Republican statement thereafter.
As soon as President Biden, bedridden by covid, announced today that he would not seek reelection, the two most prominent Republicans ever elected, issued statements. Donald Trump said on his media channel that “crooked Joe Biden” had basically been sick from the git-go and he never should been president.
But that was not the prize winner. The sleaze-prize goes to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, who issued the non-sequitur statement that if Biden chooses not to run for re-election, he should not finish his current term (5 plus months to go) and should resign immediately!
Does that make sense? Of course not to any sentient person. But look what it does for Johnson:
Were Biden to resign, then by virtue of the 25th Amendment, Kamala Harris would automatically become the President. But then the country would lack a Vice President and Harris would have to nominate one to have a Vice President who would succeed her in office were she to die or become incapacitated between now and January 20, 2025. Her nominee would have to be confirmed by both houses of Congress, one of which is led by – guess who — Mike Johnson. So if Biden were to resign now, the Republican House could prevent Harris from naming a Vice President. In which event, guess who, by statute, would be the next in line to become the President of the United States? Absent a veep, the answer is – ta dah —Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.
How slimy can these Republicans get? The answer is infinity.
Go get em, Kamala!
